The Monterey Bay is home to a rich legacy of California history. Author John Steinbeck tells the stories of working class Monterey in such novels as Cannery Row. Three of the 21 California missions are located in Monterey County. Monterey also offers a range of museums covering natural history, maritime history and art.

California Missions in Monterey County -
Spanning nearly the length of California, the historic El Camino Real is home to 21 California missions. Three of these famous, historic missions are located in Monterey County: San Carlos Borromeo de Carmel Mission, Mission Nuestra Senora de la Soledad, and Mission San Antonia de Padua. Carmel Mission is the burial place of Father Junipero Serra and is noted as one of the most beautiful and best kept of the California missions.
Path of History -
The Path of History in Monterey is marked by a series of yellow tiles set in the sidewalks of the city's main streets. The Path meanders for two miles through California history dating back to 1602 when Spanish explores landed on the shores of Monterey Bay. Historical sites along the Monterey Path of History include the Custom House, adobe structures, and the Pacific House Museum. The Path of History is a self-guided walking tour. Most historic buildings along the path are located at Monterey State Historic Park near Fisherman's Wharf.
